Nanchang is the capital city of Jiangxi Province in China. It sits in the north-central part of the province. The city is located within the hinterland of the Poyang Lake Plain. To the west, the Jiuling Mountains form a natural boundary. To the east, the city is bordered by Poyang Lake. The Gan River flows through the city. This river meets the Jin River just before flowing into Poyang Lake. Because of its location, Nanchang connects eastern and southern China. It has become a major railway hub for the southern region.

This means the city experiences four distinct seasons. Winters are short and cool. You might see occasional frosts during this time. Spring is often gloomy and very wet. From April to June, rainfall increases each month. Summers are long and very humid. Nanchang has some of the highest temperatures of any Chinese provincial capital. July and August are the sunniest months. In these months, the sun shines about 60 percent of the time. Autumn is warm or mild. This season has the lowest rainfall levels of the year. The city receives about 1,809 hours of sunshine annually.

Nanchang has a history that stretches back thousands of years. The territories of modern Jiangxi were first part of China during the Qin dynasty. At that time, the area was known as Jiujiang Commandery. In 201 BC, during the Han dynasty, the city received its name, Nanchang. This name means "southern flourishing."

It comes from a motto attributed to Emperor Gaozu. During the Sui dynasty in AD 589, the area became the Hongzhou prefecture. By the 12th century, Jiangxi was the most populous province in China. In 653, workers built the famous Tengwang Pavilion.

The city has also been a site of major political and military shifts. During the Yuan dynasty, Nanchang was the capital of Jiangxi province. This large province included the area of Guangdong. In the 16th century, the city was a base for a rebellion by Zhu Chenhao. Later, the city suffered during the Taiping Rebellion in the 1850s. On August 1, 1927, the Nanchang Uprising occurred. This was an insurrection organized by communists. It led to the development of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The current government calls Nanchang "the place where the People's Liberation Army was born."

In 1939, the city saw the Battle of Nanchang. This was a fierce fight during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The battle resulted in over 80,000 Chinese soldiers being wounded or killed. The Imperial Japan Army also suffered more than 20,000 casualties.

Today, Nanchang is a massive urban center with a large population.

It is a major hub for agricultural production. In 2000, the grain yield was 16.146 million tons. The city produces staples like rice and oranges. Nanchang is also a center for heavy industry. It produces cotton textiles, paper, and chemicals. The city has a large machinery industry. This includes making agricultural equipment and diesel engines. It is also a center for the automotive industry. Companies like Ford Motor Company have a plant here. The city even produces aircraft. In 2017, the gross regional product was 500.319 billion yuan.

Nanchang's development is linked to its infrastructure and trade. In 1915, the city received its first rail connection. This line connected Nanchang to the port of Jiujiang. Since 1949, the city has become heavily industrialized. New rail lines now connect to the Ru River Valley. The city also uses a large thermal-power plant. This plant uses coal brought by rail from Fengcheng. Nanchang is ranked 15th among the 20 fastest-growing cities in the world. This rapid growth shows its importance in the future of China and the world.
