This civilization grew from the local people in mainland Greece. They were likely inspired by the Minoan culture on the island of Crete.

The Mycenaean political system was built on a rigid hierarchy. At the very top of this social structure was a king. This ruler held the title of wanax.

Below the king, a small group of elite warriors held significant power. These states functioned as a network of palace-centered systems. The palaces acted as the main hubs for political, social, and economic life. Every part of society had a specific place within this organized structure.

The culture emerged from the local people of mainland Greece. They were likely stimulated by contact with the Minoan culture on Crete.

The most prominent site was Mycenae, which provided the name for the entire culture. Other major power centers included Pylos, Tiryns, and Midea in the Peloponnese. In Central Greece, centers like Thebes, Athens, and Orchomenos emerged. They even expanded to places like Iolcos in Thessaly. Settlements also appeared on islands in the Aegean and as far as Cyprus.

Mycenaean society relied heavily on trade across the Mediterranean. They used ships to move goods over vast distances.

Their pottery has been found in many distant lands. These include the southern Italian islands of Lipari and Vivara. It has also been found in Egypt, Cyprus, and the Levant. This trade was essential for their economy to function. It allowed them to connect with many different Mediterranean cultures.

The Mycenaeans used a writing system called Linear B. This was a syllabic script, meaning it used symbols for syllables.

Linear B provides the first written records of the Greek language. This discovery proved that the Mycenaeans were ethnically connected to later Greek populations. Their religion also included several gods. Many of these deities were later found in the famous Olympic pantheon. This shows a long continuity in Greek religious thought.

Archaeologists divide the Mycenaean period into several distinct stages. The Early Mycenaean period lasted until about 1400 BC. This era is often called the Shaft Grave period.

During this time, elite burials in shaft graves became very common. These graves often contained luxurious objects like gold masks and armor.

Following this was the Palatial Bronze Age, which peaked around 1200 BC. Finally, the Postpalatial Bronze Age began around 1210 BC. This was a period of both expansion and eventual decline.

The end of the Mycenaean civilization was a major turning point. Around 1050 BC, the civilization perished during the Bronze Age collapse.

Historians have several theories about why this happened. Some suggest a Dorian invasion caused the collapse. Others point to the activities of groups known as the "Sea Peoples." Natural disasters or climatic changes are also possible causes. This collapse led into the Greek Dark Ages, a transitional period. After this, Greece eventually moved into the Archaic period with new social organizations and the use of iron.
