This was one of the largest volcanic explosions in history. It reached a 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. The eruption destroyed settlements like Akrotiri. After 1450 BC, the Mycenaean Greeks from the mainland began to dominate Crete. This led to a hybrid culture that lasted until about 1100 BC. This period saw a decline in traditional Minoan palace life.
Modern understanding of the Minoans comes from careful archaeology. The term "Minoan" was coined by Arthur Evans. He excavated the massive palace complex at Knossos.
