Mpumalanga is a special province in eastern South Africa.
The land has two very different sides. A huge mountain range called the Drakensberg escarpment divides them. The western side is the Highveld. This area is high up in the air. It is much cooler and drier there. The eastern side is the Lowveld. This part is lower and much warmer.

This region holds some of the oldest secrets on Earth. Scientists found rocks in the Barberton area that are very old. Some rocks are over 2 billion years old. They even found fossils in the Makhonjwa mountains. These fossils show tiny signs of life from 3.22 billion years ago.

People have lived in Mpumalanga for a very long time. Archeologists found evidence of humans living here 1.7 million years ago. Early people left behind rock paintings and engravings. They even mined iron ore 28,000 years ago.
The province has changed a lot through history. In 1845, Dutch-speaking settlers arrived in the eastern Transvaal. Later, the area became a busy path for trading gold. Mining happened near places like Pilgrim's Rest.
Mpumalanga is one of the nine provinces of South Africa.
The geography of Mpumalanga is defined by the Drakensberg escarpment. This massive mountain range divides the province into two distinct zones. The western half is the Highveld. This area consists of high-altitude grassland. It sits between 1,700 and 2,300 meters above sea level. The eastern half is the Lowveld. This is a low-altitude subtropical region. It is mostly savanna habitat.

Climate varies significantly between these two zones. The Lowveld is subtropical because it is near the warm Indian Ocean. It is mostly frost-free. The Highveld is much cooler and drier due to its high elevation. It often experiences considerable freezing. The Drakensberg escarpment receives the most precipitation. Most of the province is watered by summer thunderstorms.
Mpumalanga contains some of the oldest geological features on Earth. In the Barberton area, scientists found ancient greenstones and granites. These form the Crocodile River Mountains. The Lowveld sits on African Cratonic Basement rocks. These rocks are more than 2 billion years old.

Human history in the region stretches back millions of years. Archaeological sites show human settlement dating to 1.7 million years ago. Evidence from the Lion Cavern shows iron ore mining from 28,000 years ago. Around 500 CE, people created the Lydenburg Heads. These are Africa's oldest Iron Age artworks south of the equator.
The colonial era brought significant changes and conflict. In 1845, Dutch-speaking settlers arrived during the Great Trek. They called the area the eastern Transvaal. The 19th century saw many wars over land and political control. The Pedi and Zulu kingdoms resisted colonial encroachment. After 1860, German missionaries like Alexander Merensky arrived. They spread Christianity and European values. The region became a major trade route between Johannesburg and Delagoa Bay. Gold mining became a primary economic activity near Pilgrim's Rest.
Modern Mpumalanga was formed in 1994. This happened during South Africa's first democratic elections. The province was originally called the Eastern Transvaal. The name was officially changed to Mpumalanga in 1995. Since then, the African National Congress has been the leading party. The government manages land redistribution programs. These programs aim to return land to communities moved during apartheid. One notable event was the 2001 expropriation of the Boomplaats farm. Today, the province is governed by the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature. It is led by a premier and an Executive Council.
