By 1910, the population of ethnic Portuguese reached over 1,700. In 1923, the Moçâmedes Railway connected the area to the coast. The Portuguese government later renamed the city Sá da Bandeira. This name honored Bernardo de Sá, the 1st Marquess of Sá da Bandeira.
During the colonial era, Lubango became a significant urban center. It featured architecture in a traditional Portuguese style. The city included a cathedral, a commerce hall, and an industrial hall. It also housed a secondary school and a town hall. Essential services like a hospital and a post office were present. Banking was provided by institutions such as the Banco Nacional Ultramarino. The city also served as a major hub for transportation. It maintained its own airport and a railway station. 
Political changes in the 20th century altered the city's identity. In 1951, Angola was rebranded as an Overseas Province. Following the Carnation Revolution in 1974, Angola gained independence. The city was then renamed Lubango once again. During the Angolan Civil War from 1975 to 2002, the city changed roles. It served as a major base for various military groups. These included Cuban troops, SWAPO, and government forces. This period caused the once-thriving local economy to plummet.
Today, the economy of Lubango relies heavily on its fertile surroundings. Agriculture is the primary driver of local industry. Farmers produce meat, cereals, sisal, tobacco, fruits, and vegetables. The industrial sector focuses on food processing and leather tanning. Consumer goods industries also play a large role in the economy. For shopping, residents visit the Milleneum mall. This newly built plaza offers clothes, shoes, and cosmetics. Financial services are provided by banks like BAI or BPC. While the local currency is the kwanza, US dollars are accepted in some markets.
