The top of the mountain is very cold. This is called an alpine climate. Very few plants live there. One small plant is the sky pilot. It grows low to the ground. You might also see a gray-crowned rosy finch. This is a small bird.
Many people hike to the top. Most use the Mount Whitney Trail. You must get a permit to hike there. This helps protect the mountain. On the summit, there is a stone hut. It is called the Smithsonian Institution Shelter.

This material solidified underground to form large expanses of granite. This granite is part of the Sierra Nevada Batholith. Over the last 2 to 10 million years, the Sierra Nevada was pushed upward. This movement was caused by a fault system running along the eastern base.
Because of its high elevation, Mount Whitney has an alpine tundra climate. This means the weather is very harsh and changes quickly. Summer temperatures are highly variable. They can drop below freezing or reach high temperatures during extreme heat waves in the Owens Valley.
The history of exploring Mount Whitney is full of interesting stories. In July 1864, the California Geological Survey named the peak after Josiah Whitney. He was the state geologist of California. Before it was officially named, three men from Lone Pine reached the summit in 1873. They were on a fishing trip and called it Fisherman's Peak. 
Life near the summit is difficult due to the extreme conditions. Very few plants can survive in this environment. One example is the sky pilot. This is a cushion plant that grows very low to the ground to stay protected.
Today, many people visit the mountain via the Mount Whitney Trail. This trail begins at Whitney Portal, which is at an elevation of 8,360 feet. 
Safety and shelter are important on such a high peak. In 1904, the first trail to the summit was completed by Gustave Marsh. Sadly, just four days later, a hiker named Byrd Surby was killed by lightning on the summit. In response, Marsh built a stone hut.
