He named it in honor of Jefferson Davis, who was the Secretary of War at that time. Later, during the Wheeler Survey in 1869, a new name was proposed. Survey leaders suggested naming it after George Wheeler. This idea was almost abandoned due to a different suggestion. In 1859, James H. Simpson had suggested the name "Union." Eventually, the name Wheeler Peak was used for the primary summit. 
Wheeler Peak is important because of its massive isolation. To understand this, we must compare it to Boundary Peak. Boundary Peak is the highest point in Nevada. However, Boundary Peak is considered a subsidiary summit of Montgomery Peak. Montgomery Peak is located in California. Because of this, Boundary Peak has a lower topographic prominence. Wheeler Peak is the tallest independent mountain in Nevada. This is because it is over 230 miles away from the nearest higher peak. 
Visitors can experience the mountain through various activities and trails. A paved road runs from the Great Basin National Park visitor center. This road leads to several small camping areas. The highest camping area is located more than halfway up the mountain. For hikers, there is the Wheeler Peak Summit Trail. This well-maintained trail leads from a trailhead directly to the summit. 
The mountain serves as a vital site for studying long-lived organisms. The Great Basin Bristlecone Pines provide a unique look at biological history. One specific tree named Prometheus lived there for a very long time. It was at least 4,862 years old when it died. It was recognized as the oldest known non-clonal organism. Sadly, it was inadvertently cut down in 1964 during a research project. This event highlights the delicate nature of these ancient ecosystems. The mountain remains a key location for understanding both geology and biology in the Great Basin region.
