Later, the name Shasta became common around 1841. The mountain was a landmark on the Siskiyou Trail. This was an old path used by Native Americans. In the 1850s, people came for the California Gold Rush. The first person to climb to the top was Elias Pearce in 1854.

Many writers and scientists have studied the mountain. Famous explorer John Muir once stayed in hot springs near the summit. He survived an overnight blizzard there in 1877. The mountain also has many legends. Some Klamath Tribe stories say a spirit named Skell lives at the summit. Other legends tell of a hidden city of advanced beings. Today, thousands of people pass the mountain on Interstate 5. It is a National Natural Landmark.

In the last 10,000 years, it erupted about every 800 years. The last big eruption happened about 200 years ago. That eruption created hot mudflows called lahars. The volcano has a complex shape built from four overlapping dormant volcanic cones. These cones have created a layered structure over a very long time. One prominent feature is Shastina, which is a satellite cone connected to the main mountain.

Shastina is so large that if it were a separate mountain, it would be the fourth-highest peak in the Cascades. The main summit is the highest point. The mountain also features seven named glaciers. Other named glaciers include the Bolam, Wintun, Watkins, Konwakiton, and Mud Creek glaciers.

Geologically, the mountain has a long and violent history. About 593,000 years ago, andesitic lavas erupted on the western flank. Andesite is a type of volcanic rock. Between 300,000 and 360,000 years ago, the entire north side of the volcano collapsed. This caused a massive debris avalanche. This landslide was enormous in volume. The debris flowed northwest into the Shasta Valley. Today, the Shasta River flows through that old landslide area. The oldest parts of the volcano are visible at Sargents Ridge on the south side.

Different cones formed at different times through various volcanic processes. The Misery Hill cone formed between 15,000 and 20,000 years ago. It was created by pyroxene andesite flows. The Shastina cone developed later. Its summit crater is still intact because it formed after the last ice age. Some of its flows reached near Black Butte about 9,500 years ago. The highest and youngest cone is the Hotlum Cone. It formed about 8,000 years ago. This cone has erupted at least eight or nine times since its creation. The last significant eruption occurred about 200 years ago. This event produced a pyroclastic flow and several lahars. A lahar is a hot or cold mudflow caused by volcanic activity. These flows traveled down the east flank via Ash Creek and Mud Creek.

Human history is closely tied to the mountain. For a long time, it was a landmark on the Siskiyou Trail. This trail followed ancient Native American footpaths. In the 1850s, the California Gold Rush brought Euro-American settlers to the area. The first recorded ascent was by Elias Pearce in 1854. In 1856, the first women reached the summit. Later, the arrival of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1887 increased tourism. People visited the mountain for adventure and nature. Today, Interstate 5 carries thousands of people past its base every year.

Mount Shasta also holds deep cultural and legendary significance. The Klamath Tribes have legends about the mountain. They believe a spirit named Skell lives at the summit. Other legends involve a hidden city of advanced beings from a lost continent called Lemuria. These stories became popular through books in the 1930s and 1940s. The mountain is also a site for various religious practices. These include Buddhist monasteries and Native American rituals.

The mountain's climate is shaped by its surrounding geography. It receives an average of 450 to 500 inches of snow near the timberline each winter. However, it often gets less snow than other Cascade volcanoes like Mount Rainier. This is because the Klamath Mountains sit to the west and southwest. These mountains create a rain shadow. A rain shadow happens when mountains block moisture from reaching the land behind them. This makes the area around Shasta slightly drier than other peaks in the range.
