The Shastina cone developed later. Its summit crater is still intact because it formed after the last ice age. Some of its flows reached near Black Butte about 9,500 years ago. The highest and youngest cone is the Hotlum Cone. It formed about 8,000 years ago. This cone has erupted at least eight or nine times since its creation. The last significant eruption occurred about 200 years ago. This event produced a pyroclastic flow and several lahars. A lahar is a hot or cold mudflow caused by volcanic activity. These flows traveled down the east flank via Ash Creek and Mud Creek.
Human history is closely tied to the mountain. For a long time, it was a landmark on the Siskiyou Trail. This trail followed ancient Native American footpaths. In the 1850s, the California Gold Rush brought Euro-American settlers to the area. The first recorded ascent was by Elias Pearce in 1854. In 1856, the first women reached the summit. Later, the arrival of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1887 increased tourism. People visited the mountain for adventure and nature. Today, Interstate 5 carries thousands of people past its base every year.
Mount Shasta also holds deep cultural and legendary significance. The Klamath Tribes have legends about the mountain. They believe a spirit named Skell lives at the summit. A rain shadow happens when mountains block moisture from reaching the land behind them. This makes the area around Shasta slightly drier than other peaks in the range.
