Scientists believe the lake basin formed through vertical motion faulting. This means the Earth's crust moved up and down in large blocks. These movements created the mountains on both sides of the lake. The lake basin formed in the middle as blocks tilted or dropped.

Significant amounts of water also leave the lake through evaporation. Scientists estimate that evaporation accounts for 40 to 60 percent of the total water usage.

Geologically, the Lake Tahoe Basin formed through a process called normal faulting.

This occurs when the Earth's crust moves in vertical blocks. Uplifted blocks created the Carson Range to the east and the Sierra Nevada crest to the west. Meanwhile, down-dropping and tilting blocks created the basin where the lake now sits. This type of movement is part of the Walker Lane deformation zone. This zone accommodates nearly 2 millimeters of movement every year. Three main faults shape the basin: the West Tahoe Fault, the Stateline/North Tahoe Fault, and the Incline Village Fault. The West Tahoe Fault is considered the most active and potentially hazardous.

History shows that the landscape was further shaped by much colder eras. The basin began forming about two million years ago. During the Ice Ages, massive glaciers moved through the Sierra Nevada. These glaciers carved deep canyons and iconic landmarks like Emerald Bay.

While the glaciers shaped the surrounding terrain, Lake Tahoe itself never held glaciers. Instead, the water is held in place by volcanic deposits. Even the volcano Mount Pluto played a role in the past. Its ancient eruptions created a volcanic dam on the north side of the lake. This helped form the ancestral version of the lake we see today.

The vegetation is mostly a mixed conifer forest. This includes trees like the Jeffrey pine, lodgepole pine, and sugar pine. The lake's beaches provide a rare home for the Lake Tahoe yellowcress. This is a rare plant that grows in the wet sand. Many native fish live in the water, such as the Lahontan cutthroat trout and the Tahoe sucker.

However, the introduction of non-native species like curlyleaf pondweed has changed the nearshore environment. These changes affect the delicate balance of the lake's ecology.
