He defined an element as a part of a body that cannot be broken down into smaller, different bodies. He also used the term "molecule" to describe a collection of these elements. Beyond chemistry, he viewed heat as a form of motion. He also suggested the wave theory of light and contributed to the kinetic theory of gases. These ideas connected the behavior of tiny particles to the physical laws of the universe.

Lomonosov's work in astronomy led to a significant discovery regarding our solar system. In 1761, he observed a transit of Venus from an observatory near St. Petersburg. A transit occurs when a planet passes directly between a larger body, like the Sun, and an observer. During this event, Lomonosov observed a luminous ring around the planet. He inferred that this ring was evidence of an atmosphere on Venus.

He was named a professor of chemistry in 1745 and established the academy's first chemistry laboratory.
