This land is special because many cultures shared similar ideas. These people lived there for over 3,000 years. They built great cities long before the Spanish arrived in 1493.

Life in Mesoamerica changed as people learned to farm. As early as 7000 BCE, they began growing many things. They farmed maize, beans, squash, and even cacao. They also kept animals like turkeys and dogs.

This farming helped small groups settle in one place. They built permanent villages and then large ceremonial centers. These centers were linked by paths for trading goods. They traded items like jade, cacao, and colorful ceramics.

This area is defined by a mosaic of shared cultural traits. These traits were developed by many different indigenous societies over thousands of years. Mesoamerica is one of only six places where ancient civilization arose independently. It is also one of only five regions where writing developed on its own. This makes it a vital part of global history.

The transformation of the region began with the domestication of plants and animals. As early as 7000 BCE, people began farming cacao, maize, beans, and squash. They also grew tomatoes, avocados, vanilla, and chili peppers.

They domesticated turkeys and dogs to live alongside them. This shift from hunting to farming allowed people to form permanent villages. These villages eventually grew into complex chiefdoms and large ceremonial centers. These centers were connected by trade routes for luxury goods. People exchanged items such as jade, obsidian, cacao, and ceramics.

Many distinct stages and cultures defined the Mesoamerican timeline. The Olmec culture was among the earliest complex civilizations. They lived on the Gulf Coast of Mexico and moved through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

The highlands sit between 1,000 and 2,000 meters above sea level. These areas have more climatic diversity, ranging from dry tropical to cold mountain climates. The landscape includes everything from flat plains to high peaks. This variety created many different ecological niches for people to inhabit.

Mountains and volcanoes play a major role in the physical landscape. The Sierra Madre mountains run from northern Mesoamerica down to Costa Rica. This range is historically volcanic and contains 83 volcanoes.

Some of these volcanoes are still active today. The tallest active volcano is Popocatépetl, which reaches 5,452 meters. The tallest overall mountain is the dormant Pico de Orizaba. It stands at 5,636 meters on the border of Puebla and Veracruz. These geological features shaped how people lived and moved through the land.

Spanish colonization in the 16th century brought massive changes to the region. This period marked the end of the distinct Mesoamerican cultural tradition. Eurasian diseases like smallpox and measles were introduced by the colonists. Because these diseases were new to North America, they were devastating. It is estimated that upwards of 90% of the indigenous people died. This caused enormous losses to their societies and cultures. However, many indigenous roots still survive today. Many people continue to speak ancestral languages and maintain ancient practices.
