History is divided into three main stages: the Preclassic, Classic, and Postclassic periods. Before these, the Archaic period saw the first villages. During the Archaic period, people began developing agriculture. The Preclassic period followed, lasting from roughly 2000 BC to 250 AD. This era saw the rise of complex societies. The Maya cultivated staple crops like maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers.
The Classic period is defined by the use of the Long Count calendar. This was a system used to record specific dates on monuments. During this time, the Maya lived in many different city-states. This allowed them to perform complex calculations. The Maya also practiced astronomy to understand the heavens. They built structures specifically aligned for astronomical observation.

Artistic expression was a major part of Maya life. They used many materials for their creations. These included wood, jade, and obsidian. They also worked with ceramics, stone, and stucco. Cities were not built in a perfect grid. Instead, they expanded organically over time. City centers had ceremonial and administrative complexes. These were surrounded by residential districts. Different parts of a city were often connected by causeways. Buildings included palaces, pyramid-temples, and ceremonial ballcourts.
Changes in the 9th century led to a political collapse. This happened in the central Maya region. It resulted in civil wars and the abandonment of many cities. Populations shifted toward the north. During the Postclassic period, new centers like Chichen Itza rose.
