Many groups lived on this land, including the Algonquian peoples. Specific tribes included the Piscataway, Nanticoke, Powhatan, and Lenape. Later, the Province of Maryland was founded in 1634 by George Calvert.

He wanted to create a safe place for Catholics from England. His son, Cecilius Calvert, received the official charter for the land in 1632. The new colony was named to honor Henrietta Maria of France.

Early life in the colony was often very difficult for settlers.

The first permanent settlement was at St. Mary's City. While tobacco crops made the colony profitable, many people got sick. Diseases like malaria and yellow fever made life expectancy quite low.

There was also much religious fighting between different groups. In the 1730s, a border dispute with Pennsylvania even led to a conflict called Cresap's War. Eventually, a final border was set in 1760 using the Mason–Dixon line.

Today, Maryland has a very large and diverse economy.

It is one of the most multicultural states in the country. Many residents were born in Africa, Asia, Central America, or the Caribbean. The state has a high median household income. This is partly because it is so close to Washington, D.C.
