The Dutch later conquered the Swedish colony in 1655. Eventually, the English took control of the region in 1664. William Penn later received ownership of the land. For a time, Delaware and Pennsylvania shared the same governor. This arrangement lasted until the political needs of the colonies changed.

Delaware played a vital role during the American Revolution. It was one of the original Thirteen Colonies. Patriot leaders helped the colony declare independence from British and Pennsylvania rule in June 1776. One famous moment involved Caesar Rodney. He made a dramatic overnight ride on horseback.
