To move ships from the sea up to the city, engineers had to manage different water levels. Manchester sits higher than the sea level, which creates a vertical challenge. They solved this using a system of locks. A lock is a chamber with gates that acts like a water elevator.

A ship enters the chamber, the gates close, and water is added or removed to change the ship's height. This allows vessels to climb step-by-step toward the canal's terminus. One unique part of this system is the Barton Swing Aqueduct. It is the only swing aqueduct in the world, allowing water to move across a gap.

The history of navigating these rivers began much earlier than the canal itself. In 1721, the Rivers Mersey and Irwell Navigation Act allowed for early improvements. By 1734, moderate-sized boats could travel between Manchester and the sea. However, these early routes were difficult to use. They often lacked enough depth during low rainfall or strong winds. Later, the Bridgewater Canal and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway increased competition for moving goods. By the late 19th century, the old river navigation had fallen into such disrepair that it was often unusable.

Most of these modern vessels were too big to fit through the Manchester Ship Canal. This led to a decline in traffic and the closure of terminal docks at Salford. Today, the canal is owned by Peel Holdings. They are working on the Atlantic Gateway project. Their goal is to increase shipping to 100,000 containers per year by 2030.
