Lille is a major city located in northern France within the region of French Flanders.

It sits along the Deûle river, very close to the border with Belgium. The city serves as the capital of the Hauts-de-France region and the prefecture of the Nord department. It is also the center of the European Metropolis of Lille. This metropolitan authority manages wider issues for 94 suburban municipalities. Together, these areas hold a population of 1,194,040 people as of 2022. The city is part of a massive urban area called a conurbation. This includes Belgian cities like Mouscron, Kortrijk, Tournai, and Menin. This large group is known as the Eurometropolis Lille–Kortrijk–Tournai. It is the first European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation and has over 2.1 million inhabitants.

The history of Lille is a complex chain of changing rulers and many sieges. Archaeological evidence suggests people lived in areas like Fives and Wazemmes as early as 2000 BC. The original inhabitants included Gauls like the Menapians and the Atrebates. Later, Germanic peoples such as the Saxons and the Franks arrived. The city's name likely comes from the Dutch word "Rijsel." This term means "at the island," referring to its position near water. The first written mention of the town appears in 1066 as "apud Insulam." For centuries, the city was controlled by the County of Flanders. This made the region one of the most prosperous parts of Europe.

Lille has belonged to many different states throughout its long history. It was once part of the Burgundian State and the Spanish Netherlands. It also fell under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1668, the city was definitively attached to France following the War of Spanish Succession.

This change happened after King Louis XIV successfully laid siege to the city. To secure the area, the Marquis of Vauban built the Citadel of Lille. The city faced many more military challenges in later years. It was besieged in 1792 during the Franco-Austrian War. It also faced sieges and occupations during the two World Wars of the 20th century.

Economic shifts have defined the character of Lille for hundreds of years. The city began as a merchant center and became a manufacturing hub in the 16th century. During the Industrial Revolution, it grew into a massive industrial capital. The city specialized in the textile and mechanical industries.

However, these industries began to decline starting in the 1960s. This decline caused a long period of economic crisis for the region. The city had to reinvent itself to survive. In the 1990s, Lille began a major conversion to the tertiary sector. This means moving from making goods to providing services. This shift helped rehabilitate many districts that had suffered during the industrial decline.

Today, Lille is known for its distinct architectural styles and cultural importance. The historic center, known as Old Lille, features 17th-century red brick townhouses.
