After the war ended, Beria reached the highest levels of Soviet society. In 1945, he was named a Marshal of the Soviet Union. In 1946, he became a full member of the Politburo.

He also served as a First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers. He formed a triumvirate, or a group of three leaders, with Georgy Malenkov and Vyacheslav Molotov. This group briefly led the Soviet Union. However, his time as a leader was very short. His colleagues in the leadership did not want him to hold such power.

In June 1953, a coup was organized to remove Beria from power. This coup was supported by his colleagues and Marshal Georgy Zhukov. Beria was arrested and faced a trial for treason and other offenses. He was ultimately executed on 23 December 1953. His life illustrates the intense and often violent nature of Soviet politics. His actions left a lasting mark on the history of Eastern Europe and the world. The study of his life helps us understand the mechanisms of total state control.
