Historically, Kunming has been a vital hub for trade and transport. The city has a history spanning nearly 2,400 years. Early settlements near Lake Dian date back to Neolithic times. The modern growth of Kunming began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A major turning point was the construction of the Kunming–Haiphong railway. The French built this line to connect Yunnan to Vietnam. It was completed around 1911. This railway allowed the city to tap into local mineral resources. In 1908, Kunming became a treaty port for foreign trade. This opened the city to the global economy.

They brought entire industrial plants with them to keep them safe from bombers. These factories were re-erected in Kunming to continue production. The city became a vital manufacturing base for the wartime government. Wujiaba Airport became a central training hub for the Chinese Air Force.
