First, it was the capital of the Nanzhao kingdom from 779 to 902. Later, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Dali from 937 to 1253. During the Yuan Dynasty conquest, the city was razed. Many historical records were also burnt. The current old town was organized in the late 14th century. This happened under the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The region later became a center for the Panthay Rebellion from 1856 to 1863. A massive earthquake also caused severe damage in 1925.
Tourism is now a major part of the local economy. The city is an official tourist destination in China. Many visitors come to see the natural scenery and cultural heritage.
Historically, Dali was a center for important trade. It could control trade between India and China. The town of Xizhou was famous for its skilled woodworkers. Dali is also known for producing high-quality marble. This stone was used for both decoration and construction. The material was so famous that the modern Chinese word for marble is "Dali stone." 
Transportation connects Dali to many other parts of China. The Dali Fengyi Airport provides domestic flights. It connects the area to cities like Kunming and Shanghai.
