Kim's early life was shaped by the Japanese occupation of Korea. He was born Kim Song Ju on 15 April 1912. His family belonged to the Jeonju Kim clan. They lived in the Mangyongdae neighborhood near Pyongyang. Because of Japanese repression, his family moved to China in 1919. His father was an independence activist and a Presbyterian elder. Growing up in northeast China, Kim became interested in communist ideology. By 1931, he joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He spent much of his youth fighting in various anti-Japanese guerrilla groups.

During the 1930s, Kim rose through the ranks of guerrilla warfare. In 1935, he adopted the name Kim Il Sung. This name translates to "Kim become the sun."

He served as a political commissar for a detachment of 160 soldiers. In 1937, at age 24, he became a commander of the 6th division. He led 200 guerrillas in a successful raid on Poch'onbo. This raid included destroying local government offices and a police station. These military successes earned him fame among Chinese guerrillas. The Japanese military even placed him on a wanted list. They gave him the nickname "the Tiger" because of his effectiveness.

Following the surrender of Japan in World War II, Kim's political path changed. The Soviet Union divided the Korean Peninsula into two parts. The Soviet Union put Kim into power in the northern section.

In 1950, Kim authorized an invasion of South Korea. This action triggered the Korean War and United Nations intervention. The conflict ended with a ceasefire in July 1953. After the war, Kim focused on building a centrally planned economy. He maintained very close political and economic ties with the Soviet Union and China.

Kim developed a specific ideology known as Juche. This system focused on independence, self-sustenance, and self-defence. It emphasized Korean nationalism and self-reliance, or *jaryok gaengsaeng*.

Despite this policy, North Korea relied on aid from the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc. This support continued until the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. When the aid stopped, the North Korean economy suffered greatly. This economic collapse contributed to a widespread famine in 1994. During the 1960s, North Korea's standard of living was slightly higher than the South. However, by the 1970s, the South became an economic powerhouse while the North stagnated.

Kim Il Sung also established a massive personality cult. He was known as the "Great Leader."

This cult dominated the domestic politics of North Korea. In 1980, at the 6th WPK Congress, he prepared for a transition of power. His oldest son, Kim Jong Il, was elected as a Presidium member. This choice established the Kim dynasty, as Kim Jong Il became his successor. Kim's influence lasted through the terms of ten United States presidents. He also outlived major communist allies like Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong.

Kim's life connects to many global historical movements. His career spanned the rise and fall of major communist powers. He navigated the complex relationships between the Soviet Union, China, and the United States. His era was defined by the Cold War and the struggle for Korean reunification. The North Korean government continued an infiltration campaign to achieve this goal. Even after his death, his legacy remains central to the nation.
