In 1962, Rwanda gained independence. Kigali was chosen as the capital because it was so central. It grew slowly for many years. In the early 1970s, only 25,000 people lived there. Back then, there were only five paved roads. By 1991, the population had grown to 250,000. The city faced hard times during the Rwandan Civil War and the genocide in 1994. After those events, the city was rebuilt and grew very fast.

Today, Kigali is a very busy place.

As the nation's primate city, Kigali is a relatively young urban center. It functions as a major hub for government and commerce.

The name Kigali has deep roots in Rwandan history and language. The word comes from a Kinyarwanda prefix and an adjective suffix. Together, they mean "wide" or "broad."

This name was likely first applied to Mount Kigali because the mountain is broad. Oral history suggests the name originated in the 14th century. Scholar Alexis Kagame researched these traditions extensively. He noted that the name might have come into use after King Cyilima I Rugwe conquered the area. Legend says Rugwe looked at the territory from a hill and called the country vast.

Long before the modern city, the region had many inhabitants. The Twa people were the earliest inhabitants of what is now Rwanda. They were hunter-gatherers who settled the area between 8000 and 3000 BC. Later, Bantu groups including the Hutu and Tutsi arrived. They began clearing forests to practice agriculture. The Kingdom of Rwanda was founded in the 14th century near Lake Muhazi. At that time, Kigali was part of a small state. It faced larger neighbors like Bugesera and Gisaka. Over several centuries, different dynasties fought to control and expand these territories.

The modern founding of Kigali began in 1907.

Richard Kandt was a German administrator and explorer. He chose the site for his headquarters because of its central location. He also valued the security and the views from Nyarugenge Hill. Kandt built the first European-style house in the city. Today, this building is the Kandt House Museum of Natural History. During the German era, foreign merchants began trading in the city. They traded items like beads and cloth. Later, Belgium took control of Rwanda and Burundi during World War I. Kigali remained a small city during this colonial period. By the time of independence in 1962, it had only 6,000 people.

Kigali became the national capital in 1962. This shifted the administrative focus away from Huye. The city grew steadily for several decades. In the early 1970s, the population was only 25,000. At that time, there were only five paved roads. By 1991, the population reached 250,000. The city faced extreme hardship during the 1990s. In April 1994, President Juvénal Habyarimana was killed when his aircraft was shot down near Kigali. This event triggered the Rwandan genocide. The Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) fought to take control of the country. They seized Kigali on 4 July 1994. Since then, the city has experienced rapid growth and much of it has been rebuilt.

Today, Kigali is a massive urban center.
