This location makes Goma a vital strategic hub for the region.

The geography of Goma is defined by intense volcanic activity. The city lies on the Goma plain. This plain consists of volcanic lavas and gentle slopes. These slopes lead down toward Lake Kivu.

The terrain is mostly volcanic with basalt flows covering the surface. This creates a skeletal soil profile. Only a small portion of the land has sandy soil. Several hills punctuate the landscape, including Mount Goma and Mount Ndosho. Mount Goma is an extinct volcano located at the public port. It marks the southeastern limit of the plain.

Volcanoes surround the city and shape its environment. The Virunga volcanic range is located to the west. This range includes several prominent peaks. These are Mount Nyamuragira, Mount Nyiragongo, and Mount Mikeno. Other peaks include Mount Bisoke, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi, and Mount Sabyinyo.

Mount Nyiragongo is particularly significant. It has been active since the early 1900s. It features an active lava lake and periodic eruptions. Notable eruptions occurred in 1977, 2002, and 2021. The volcanic fields of Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo also show continuous carbon dioxide degassing.

The name Goma has deep cultural roots. It is a modification of the name Ngoma. In many Bantu-speaking communities, Ngoma means "drum." This term is linked to ritual dances and ceremonies. People believe the name refers to the loud, drum-like sounds of volcanic eruptions. These eruptions once changed the local topography. An eruption destroyed the original village. This caused the inhabitants to move and form three new villages. One of these was Ngoma, which became the modern city. The others were Matcha, now Sake, and Munti, now Munigi.

Administratively, Goma is divided into two urban municipalities. These are called communes. The two communes are Goma and Karisimbi. They are further subdivided into 18 quarters, or neighborhoods.

These quarters include areas like Les Volcans, Himbi, and Katoyi. The city uses a local governance model called Nyumba Kumi. This means "ten houses." It was introduced in 1997 by the AFDL. Under this system, an appointed individual manages ten households. This structure works under the authority of a quarter chief. A mayor and a deputy mayor lead the entire city.

History has brought both growth and hardship to Goma. In 1906, it was established as a military outpost. By 1951, it became the capital of North Kivu. The city's population has grown rapidly. In 1945, it had about 8,600 inhabitants. By 2022, the census estimated the population at nearly 2 million people. However, the city also faces instability. The 1994 Rwandan genocide caused a massive refugee crisis. More recently, the M23 rebel movement has impacted the area. The city was captured by M23 rebels in late 2012. It was later retaken by government forces.

More recently, the city came under M23 control again after a fresh offensive.

Despite these challenges, Goma remains a center for culture and education. It is home to the University of Goma and the Adventist University of Goma. The city also hosts the annual Amani Festival.

The Foyer Culturel de Goma serves as a regional art school. The city is also near the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Virunga National Park. The climate is a tropical savanna type. Because of the high altitude, the weather is milder than other places at this latitude. Days are warm and nights are pleasant.
