Demographic shifts have shaped the city over many centuries. In 1897, the population was 59,076 people. At that time, 47.2% of residents spoke Russian as their first language. The Jewish population was 29.1%, while Ukrainians made up 19.6%. By 1970, the population had grown significantly to 261,000 people. This growth changed the ethnic makeup of the city. The Ukrainian share rose from 36% in 1926 to 63% in 1959. However, the Jewish population decreased from 26% in 1926 to just 6% in 1959. This decline was a result of the Holocaust during World War II.
Kherson has faced many periods of conflict and occupation. During the Second World War, German forces occupied the city from 1941 to 1944. In September 1941, several thousand Jewish residents were killed near Zelenivka. The city also suffered during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian forces occupied the city from March until November 2022. 

Today, Kherson remains a vital part of the Ukrainian landscape. It is a center for science, culture, and industry. Despite historical hardships, many residents feel a strong connection to the city. A 2021 study found that over 80% of citizens consider it a good place to live. Most residents also expressed a strong attachment to their Ukrainian identity. The city continues to manage the challenges of modern reconstruction. It remains an essential administrative and economic link in southern Ukraine.
