Chernivtsi is a major city located in southwestern Ukraine.

The history of the area begins in the Neolithic era. Archaeological evidence shows various ancient cultures lived here. These include the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture and the Corded Ware culture. Artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages have also been found. During the Middle Ages, East Slavic tribes like the White Croats and Tivertsi inhabited the region. A fortified settlement was later built on the north-eastern shore of the Prut River. This stronghold is thought to have been constructed by Grand Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl. However, the Mongol invasion led by Boroldai destroyed this fortress in 1259.
Following the destruction, new settlements grew on the south-western shore. This location was more elevated and strategically advantageous. In 1325, a fort named Țețina was mentioned near a crossing point on the Prut River. This fort was part of a defensive group including Hotin and a fort on the Kolachin River. Between 1359 and 1775, the city was part of the Principality of Moldavia. It served as the administrative center for a local county known as a ținut. The name Cernăuți first appeared in a document from 1408 by Alexandru cel Bun. Later, the Ottoman Empire also exerted influence over the region.
Political control of Chernivtsi changed many times during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The early 20th century brought significant political shifts and conflicts.
World War II caused further changes in sovereignty. The Soviet Union occupied the city from 1940 to 1941. Romania then recovered control of the city. The Soviet Union occupied the area again from 1944 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union. After the Soviet Union dissolved, Chernivtsi became part of independent Ukraine. This long history of different rulers explains why the city has many names. It was known as Czernowitz under Austria and Chernovtsy under the Soviet Union. These different names reflect the various ethnic and political identities that shaped the city.
Today, Chernivtsi is a highly connected regional hub.
