The land in Kendari changes depending on where you stand. Some areas near the coast are very flat. In the north, the ground becomes much more hilly. These hills are part of the Nipa-Nipa mountain formation. These mountains reach heights of about 600 meters. Most of the city has gentle slopes. However, the northern slopes can be quite steep. The soil is mostly made of a type called cambisols. About 30 percent of the city sits on this soil.
Kendari has a very long and interesting history. The name might come from the word "Kandai." This was a tool made of wood and bamboo used to push boats. The bay has been known since the 15th century. Portuguese maps once called it "Citta dela Baia." The Tolaki people founded a kingdom here in the fifth century. They were ruled by the Konawe kingdom. Legend says a holy man named Onggodo saved the people from a disaster. Later, the kingdom embraced Islam during the rule of King Lakidende.
Many different groups of people have lived in Kendari over time. In the 1800s, Dutch officials mapped the area. They named the bay Vosmaer Bay to honor a sailor. Bugis and Bajo traders lived in the villages near the bay. During the 1900s, the city saw many big changes. Japanese troops occupied the city in 1942. Later, the city became part of the new Indonesian Republic. In 1964, Southeast Sulawesi became its own province. Kendari was chosen to be the capital city.
Today, Kendari is a growing place with many people. The population was about 345,107 in the year 2020. By mid-2023, the estimate was 351,085 people. This includes 176,279 males and 174,806 females. The weather stays warm and tropical all year. It rains heavily from December to July. The air feels very damp because humidity is high. It stays between 81 and 87 percent most of the time. The city is managed by an elected mayor and a local parliament.
Kendari is the capital city of the Indonesian province of Southeast Sulawesi. It serves as a vital economic and educational hub for the entire region. The city is home to many universities and various colleges.
The geography of Kendari is diverse and changes as you move through it. The city sits on the southeastern part of mainland Sulawesi. It is located on the edge of Kendari Bay. To the north, it borders the Konawe Regency. To the south and west, it borders the South Konawe Regency. The topography ranges from flat coastal areas to hilly terrain. The northern part of the city belongs to the Nipa-Nipa mountain formation. These mountains reach elevations of approximately 600 meters. While most slopes are less than 25 percent, northern slopes can exceed 40 percent. The soil is primarily composed of cambisols, which make up 30 percent of the area. Other soil types include alluvium and podzols, though these account for less than 8 percent.
Kendari experiences a tropical rainforest climate, known scientifically as Köppen Af. This means the city stays warm and wet throughout the year. Heavy rainfall occurs from December to July. Moderate rainfall is more common from August to November. The average temperature remains warm, but it fluctuates slightly. The lowest average temperatures usually occur in August, reaching about 24 degrees Celsius. The highest averages are seen in November, reaching around 32 degrees Celsius.
The history of the region stretches back many centuries. The Bay of Kendari was known as early as the 15th century. Portuguese maps from that era called it "Citta dela Baia." They also referred to it as "Baia du Tivora." The Tolaki people founded a kingdom here in the fifth century. This was the Konawe kingdom. Its first king was Mokole Roro, who ruled from 428 to 447. This period is known as Ancient Konawe. The capital was originally located in Rahambuu, which is now called Unaaha.
Society in the old kingdom was organized into three distinct classes. The Anakia were the nobles and the upper class. The Tononggapa were the commoners and the peasants. The Oata were the slaves. People were united by a system called Kalo Sara. This means "circle of tribal laws." It is represented by a large rattan bracelet tied with a white napkin. The rattan symbolized unity, while the white napkin symbolized good deeds. In the 15th century, Islam began to arrive through trade. King Lakidende officially embraced Islam during his reign from 1724 to 1786. He promoted mosques and Islamic marriage traditions. The Kalo Sara symbol remained, but people interpreted it through Islamic beliefs.
The colonial period brought significant changes to the area. In 1828, a Dutch sailor named Jacques Nicholas Vosmaer mapped the coast. He was looking for a place to build a trading post. The bay was renamed Vosmaer Bay in his honor. By the mid-1800s, Bugis and Bajo traders and fishermen settled near the bay. The area was attractive because the Konawe political situation was stable. However, tensions rose when the Dutch tried to establish the kingdom of Laiwoi. In 1908, Dutch troops besieged Puundombi Fort, and Konawe fell.
Today, Kendari is a rapidly growing urban center. The population has increased significantly over the last few decades. In the 2010 census, the population was 289,966. By the 2020 census, it had grown to 345,107. Official estimates for mid-2023 placed the population at 351,085. This total includes 176,279 males and 174,806 females. The city is divided into several administrative districts, or kecamatan. There are 11 districts in total, including the newer Nambo district. The city is managed by an elected mayor and a local parliament. Because of rapid urbanization, the city must manage risks like flooding. This is a common challenge for growing coastal cities.
