John Vincent Atanasoff was a great inventor. 
John wanted to solve math problems faster. Old tools were too slow for his work. In the late 1930s, he began a new project. He worked with a student named Clifford Berry. Together, they made the Atanasoff–Berry Computer, or ABC. 
The ABC was very special. It was the first electronic digital computer. It used vacuum tubes to do math. These tubes are glass parts that control electricity. The machine also used binary code. This is a way to use two numbers, 0 and 1, to solve problems.
For a long time, people argued about who made the first computer. In 1973, a judge made a choice. The judge ruled that Atanasoff was the true inventor. This was a very important win for him. Today, many things are named after his great work.

In 1936, he even invented an analog calculator for analyzing surface geometry. However, he realized that the fine mechanical tolerances required for accuracy were difficult to maintain with gears. This pushed him to explore digital solutions instead of mechanical ones.

Atanasoff's academic background prepared him for this complex work. He was born on October 4, 1903, in Hamilton, New York. His father, Ivan Atanasov, was an electrical engineer from Bulgaria. His mother, Iva Lucena Purdy, was a mathematics teacher. His parents' interests in science helped cultivate his curiosity. At age nine, he already learned to use a slide rule. He completed high school in only two years. He earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Florida in 1925. He later earned a master's degree in mathematics from Iowa State. In 1930, he completed his formal education with a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
For decades, the history of the computer was a subject of legal debate. Atanasoff met John Mauchly in 1940 at a scientific meeting in Philadelphia. In 1941, Mauchly visited Atanasoff in Iowa to examine the ABC prototype. Later, patent disputes arose regarding the work of Eckert and Mauchly. In 1954, an IBM attorney sought Atanasoff's help to challenge existing patents. This eventually led to the famous lawsuit Honeywell v. Sperry Rand. In 1973, Judge Earl R. Larson issued a landmark ruling. The judge decided that Eckert and Mauchly had derived their ideas from Atanasoff. This ruling officially recognized Atanasoff as the inventor of the automatic electronic digital computer.
Atanasoff's life after the invention was filled with diverse scientific work. After World War II, he worked with the government on specialized equipment. He developed seismographs and microbarographs to detect long-range explosives. In 1952, he founded the Ordnance Engineering Corporation. He later started Cybernetics Incorporated in 1961. During this time, he even developed a phonetic alphabet for computers. He lived until 1995, passing away at the age of 91. His legacy is honored by many prestigious awards and scientific institutions.
Many honors reflect the global impact of his work. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush awarded him the National Medal of Technology.
