Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in January 1815. His family immigrated to Kingston, Upper Canada, in 1820. Kingston is located in what is now eastern Ontario. Life was difficult for his family because his father's businesses failed. Because of these financial struggles, Macdonald had to earn his own living at age 15. This meant they learned by working under established lawyers.

His political journey began in local government in Kingston. In 1844, the legislature elected him as a representative. By 1857, he had become the premier of the colony. The political system at the time was quite unstable. In 1864, Macdonald took a major step toward creating a nation. He joined his political rival, George Brown, in a Great Coalition. He also brought British Columbia and Prince Edward Island into the nation. To connect these distant lands, he worked to complete the Canadian Pacific Railway. Macdonald's leadership faced many challenges and controversies. In 1873, he resigned from office because of a scandal. This involved his party taking bribes from businessmen. These men wanted the contract to build the national railway. Macdonald was reelected in 1878 and continued his work. However, his government made decisions that caused deep division. In 1885, he approved the execution of Louis Riel for treason. Riel was a leader of the Métis people. This decision angered many French-speaking Canadians.

Historians view Macdonald's legacy with complex perspectives. He is respected for building a strong national government. He is also criticized for policies that harmed specific groups. He supported a head tax on Chinese immigrants. He also oversaw the development of the residential school system. This system was designed to assimilate Indigenous children into European culture. These actions caused great hardship for Indigenous peoples. Despite these criticisms, he remains one of the highest-rated prime ministers in Canadian history. He died in 1891 and remains the oldest person to hold the office.
