He also moved crustaceans into a class separate from insects. In 1802, he published *Hydrogéologie*, where he discussed how the Earth's continents move. He argued that global currents caused continents to erode on their eastern borders and deposit material on their western borders.

Throughout his career, Lamarck held several important scientific positions. In 1779, he gained membership in the French Academy of Sciences. In 1788, he became the keeper of the herbarium at the Royal Garden. During the French Revolution, he helped rename the Royal Garden to the Jardin des Plantes. In 1793, he was appointed a professor of zoology at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. At this time, he received a salary of nearly 2,500 francs per year. He was also one of the first scientists to use the term "biology" in its modern sense.

Lamarck's ideas faced significant opposition during his lifetime. He often clashed with the famous paleontologist Georges Cuvier. Cuvier did not support the idea of evolution and defended the "fixity of species." This means Cuvier believed species did not change once they were created. While Lamarck's specific mechanism of inheritance was later refuted, his work was influential. Many historians believe his ideas helped inspire Charles Darwin. Darwin later developed the theory of natural selection, which provided a different explanation for evolution.
