Some islands, like Taiwan, are even disputed territories. Protecting these unique places is a major goal for conservationists.

Oceanic islands form through several geological processes. One common method involves volcanic hotspots. These are areas where the mantle is hotter than the surrounding lithosphere. This heat causes lava to rise and create volcanoes. As tectonic plates move over a stationary hotspot, they create island chains. In the Hawaiian Islands, the oldest islands are 25 million years old. The youngest, Hawaii, remains an active volcano.

Other chains, like the Line Islands, may form all at once from tectonic fractures. In these cases, the islands are all about 8 million years old.

Other islands form through the growth of coral reefs or sediment buildup. When coral reefs grow around a central lagoon, they form an atoll. Tectonic movements can also lift a reef out of the water. Even a rise of 1 meter can allow sediment to accumulate and form an island. Along shorelines, waves deposit sediment to create long, sandy bars called barrier islands. These islands protect coasts by absorbing energy from large waves.

Continental islands have a different origin story. They were once part of a continent but became separated by plate tectonics. This separation can happen through seafloor spreading. This process creates new oceanic crust that pushes older crust away. Some islands, like New Zealand, are remnants of continents that sank. The crustal area known as Zealandia has lost 93% of its surface to submersion.
