Some reefs are called fringing reefs because they attach to land. Barrier reefs form a wall around land with a lagoon in between. Atolls are ring-shaped reefs with no land at all. Other reefs, called mounds, are built by tiny microorganisms. These microbes do not have skeletons like corals do. Instead, they help build up layers of sediment over time.

Scientists have studied reefs for a long time. The word reef comes from the Old Norse word rif. This word meant rib or reef.

Long ago, different groups built reefs. During the Cambrian Period, tiny tube-like organisms called Archaeocyatha built reefs. Later, during the Cretaceous Period, molluscs called rudist bivalves were major builders. Today, the corals we see are called Scleractinia. These corals arrived after a big extinction event at the end of the Permian period. They have become very important reef builders throughout history.

Reefs are huge and very important to our planet. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest system in the world.

Recently, many reefs have faced a hard job called bleaching. This happens when corals feel stress from heat or light. The coral lets out tiny algae called zooxanthellae that live in its tissue. This leaves the coral white and very weak. Between February 2023 and April 2024, bleaching was seen in 83 different countries. This was the 4th major global bleaching event ever recorded.

We can think of reefs as the busy cities of the ocean. They provide homes and food for one third of all marine life.

Just like a house protects you from rain, reefs protect coasts from big storms. They block forceful waves from hitting the shore and damaging buildings. When reefs are healthy, they keep people and property safe. People work hard to protect them by watching water quality. They also try to find ways to help corals grow again. Keeping our oceans healthy helps these underwater cities thrive.

Reefs are vital to the health of our oceans and our coastlines. They can form through abiotic processes, which are non-living events like sand deposition or wave erosion. However, many of the most famous reefs are biotic. This means they are created by living organisms. Corals and coralline algae are the primary builders of these massive structures.

Some reefs are even man-made, known as artificial reefs. These can be intentional structures or accidental shipwrecks.

Living reefs grow through a complex biological process. Corals and calcareous algae grow on top of one another. This builds a three-dimensional, macroscopic skeletal framework.

This framework is constantly modified by other organisms and inorganic processes. Some reefs, called mounds, differ from these skeletal frameworks. Mounds are built by microorganisms that lack large skeletons. For example, cyanobacteria can encourage the accumulation of calcium carbonate. This creates distinct sediment bodies on the seafloor. These microbial mounds, like stromatolites, were very common before large shelled organisms evolved.

Reefs are classified by their origin, location, depth, and topography. They also take different shapes based on their relation to land. A fringing reef is attached directly to a landmass. A barrier reef forms a calcareous barrier around land, creating a lagoon between the shore and the reef. An atoll is a ring-shaped reef that exists with no land present at all. In these systems, the reef front facing the ocean is a high-energy area. The internal lagoon is a lower-energy area with fine-grained sediments.

The history of reef building spans millions of years. During the Cambrian Period, extinct organisms called Archaeocyatha built reefs with tubular skeletons. In the Cretaceous Period, molluscs known as rudist bivalves were major reef builders. The corals we recognize today are called Scleractinia. They arose after the Permian–Triassic extinction event. These corals have become increasingly important throughout the Mesozoic Era. They differ from older rugose corals because their skeletons are made of aragonite rather than calcite.

Coral reefs are incredibly significant to marine life and human safety. They serve as a resource for one-third of all marine populations. Animals use them for habitat, protection, and spawning grounds. Reefs also act as a physical barrier for coastlines. They block forceful waves and storms from hitting the shore. Without them, storms could cause extreme damage to buildings and people. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest coral reef system on Earth. It reaches a length of over 2,300 kilometers.

Today, reefs face a major threat called coral bleaching. This occurs when corals experience high-stress events. Common stressors include temperature changes, sun exposure, or changes in nutrient availability. When stressed, corals expel the zooxanthellae algae living in their tissues. These algae are essential because they produce energy for the coral. Without them, the coral becomes colorless, or bleached.

If the stress does not stop, the coral will eventually die. This impacts the entire marine ecosystem that relies on the coral.

We are currently seeing massive global bleaching events. The 4th major global bleaching event was classified by the NOAA and ICRI. Significant bleaching was observed from February 2023 until April 2024. This event was seen in at least 83 different countries. During this recent event, 84% of the world's reefs were affected. This is a huge increase from the 1st global event in 1998, when only 21% of reefs were impacted. Organizations like the GCRMN and NOAA work to monitor these changes.

Conservation efforts are focused on protecting these underwater worlds. Scientists work to identify high-risk areas to allow for quick emergency responses. One way to help is by improving water quality. Another method is the repopulation of coral to revive damaged areas. People also create artificial reefs to help marine life. These can be made by sinking oil rigs through the Rigs-to-Reefs program. They can also be purpose-built objects like reef balls. These structures provide stable surfaces for algae and invertebrates to attach to.
