Today, international standards ensure that containers from different countries work together. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published standards between 1968 and 1970. These rules allow for consistent loading and unloading in ports worldwide. To ensure safety, the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) was established in 1972. Every international container must carry a CSC safety-approval plate.

The impact of the container on global trade is massive. In 2010, containers accounted for 60 percent of the world's seaborne trade. Because the process is so centralized and continuous, a single bottleneck can cause delays everywhere. This was seen during the global supply chain crisis of 2020 and 2021. Despite these challenges, containers remain the primary way the world moves goods.
