An intermodal container is a large, standardized steel box used for global freight transport. 
To allow for efficient handling, these containers use a specific mechanical design. Each container features eight corner castings, which are specialized metal parts at every corner. 

Most intermodal containers belong to a specific category known as "dry freight" or "general purpose" containers. These make up 90 percent of the global container fleet. They are durable, closed, rectangular boxes made of rust-retardant weathering steel. 

The history of containerization began much earlier than the modern steel box. In the late 18th century, coal mining regions in England used early versions of this idea. In 1766, James Brindley designed a boat called the 'Starvationer' that used ten wooden containers. 
Modern containerization saw massive innovation in the mid-20th century. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the U.S. military developed the "Transporter," a rigid, corrugated steel container. This unit was later developed into the Container Express (CONEX) box system in 1952. The U.S. military used hundreds of thousands of these boxes by the late 1960s. Around this same time, engineer Keith Tantlinger made vital contributions to container design. He developed the corner castings and the twistlock mechanism. He also worked with Malcom McLean, who formed the Sea-Land shipping enterprise.
Today, international standards ensure that containers from different countries work together. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published standards between 1968 and 1970. These rules allow for consistent loading and unloading in ports worldwide. To ensure safety, the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) was established in 1972. Every international container must carry a CSC safety-approval plate. 
The impact of the container on global trade is massive. In 2010, containers accounted for 60 percent of the world's seaborne trade. By 2012, there were approximately 20.5 million intermodal containers in use globally. While this system is efficient, it also creates connections that can lead to vulnerabilities. Because the process is so centralized and continuous, a single bottleneck can cause delays everywhere. This was seen during the global supply chain crisis of 2020 and 2021. Despite these challenges, containers remain the primary way the world moves goods.
