Some ships have cranes on them. We call these geared ships. They can unload at ports without big cranes. Other ships do not have cranes. These are called gearless ships. Most big ships are gearless. They use cranes at the port instead.

Before containerization, moving goods was a very slow job. Workers had to load items one by one. This was called break-bulk shipping. It required a lot of manual work to move and secure every piece.

These boxes can be moved all at once. This way of working is much faster. It can reduce shipping time by 84%. It also makes the cost of shipping 35% lower.

People have been trying to use boxes for cargo for a long time. In 1766, James Brindley designed a box boat called the "Starvationer." It used 10 wooden containers to move coal in England.

Later, in 1931, the first container ship in the world was launched. It was owned by the Southern Railway and had 21 slots for containers. After World War II, many old oil tankers were changed into container ships. In 1956, a ship named Ideal X started a new era in shipping. It was owned by Malcom McLean and carried 58 metal containers.

They have a strong frame called a keel and metal ribs called frames. The inside has special holding cells with rails to keep containers in place. Some ships are "geared," which means they have their own cranes. These geared ships can unload themselves at small ports. Most big ships are "gearless" and do not have cranes.

A container ship is a specialized cargo vessel designed for intermodal freight transport. These ships carry goods inside standardized, truck-size intermodal containers. This modern method is known as containerization. It has revolutionized global trade by making the movement of goods highly efficient. Today, container ships handle approximately 90% of all non-bulk cargo worldwide.

To understand how they work, we must look at the mechanism of containerization. Before this system, ships used break-bulk shipping. This required workers to load manufactured goods one piece at a time. This manual process, called stevedoring, was slow and difficult. Containerization changed this by grouping cargo into uniform metal boxes. These boxes can be moved all at once and secured in a standardized way. This efficiency reduced shipping times by 84% and lowered costs by 35%.

The physical structure of a container ship is built for massive loads. The hull is constructed around a strong central keel. Inside the hull, there are several below-deck cargo holds. These holds are topped by hatch covers where more containers can be stacked. The interior of the holds often functions like a huge warehouse. It uses vertical guide rails to create individual holding cells. These cells keep the containers organized and stable during the voyage.

Modern ship architecture involves complex engineering to ensure strength. The hull uses a series of steel frames that resemble ribs. These frames are fastened at right angles to the keel. Large beams support the main deck and run across the width of the ship. These beams, along with the frames and transverse bulkheads, reinforce the entire shell. Many ships also feature double-bottom tanks. These tanks provide a second watertight shell and often hold fuel oil, ballast water, or fresh water.

The history of these vessels stretches back many years. In 1766, James Brindley designed a box boat called the "Starvationer" in England. It used 10 wooden containers to move coal via the Bridgewater Canal. Later, in 1931, the first true container ship was launched by the Southern Railway. It featured 21 slots for containers. After World War II, many surplus T2 oil tankers were converted into early container ships. A major turning point occurred on April 26, 1956. A ship named Ideal X, owned by Malcom McLean, left Port Newark, New Jersey. This voyage marked the beginning of the modern container revolution.

Container ships are categorized into seven major size classes. Capacity is measured in twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEU. One TEU represents a standard 20-foot container. Many ships use 40-foot containers, which count as 2 TEU. Small vessels under 3,000 TEU are called feeder ships. They often move cargo between smaller ports. Larger ships include the Panamax class, which is limited by the original Panama Canal locks. The Neopanamax class is larger, designed for the new third set of locks opened in 2016.

At the largest end of the scale are Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV). These massive ships can carry over 24,000 TEU. Some, like the Maersk Triple E class, measure 400 meters in length. These giants can carry a load equal to 16 or 17 pre-World War II freighter ships.

Because of their size, they require specialized ports. As of 2012, only 51 ports in the world could accommodate Very Large Container Ships (VLCS) with over 10,000 TEU.

Ships are also classified by whether they have their own loading equipment. "Geared" ships have installed cargo cranes, allowing them to visit ports without pier-side cranes. This makes them more flexible for smaller regions. However, they cost more to buy and maintain. Most modern large ships are "gearless," or ungeared. These ships rely on massive, expensive cranes located at the port to move their containers.
