Later, Mikhail Britnev designed the Pilot in 1864 to extend the summer navigation season in the Gulf of Finland. He gave the bow a 20-degree raise from the keel line. This allowed the ship to ride on top of the ice to break it. 
The 20th century brought the era of diesel-electric propulsion. The Ymer, built in 1933, was the world's first diesel-electric icebreaker. 
Today, many nations rely on these ships for both commerce and safety. Canada uses icebreakers to prevent flooding caused by ice jams on the St. Lawrence River.
