In 1981, a company called IBM released a new machine. 

To make it quickly, a team worked in secret. They used a plan called "Project Chess." This team did not make every part themselves. Instead, they used parts from other companies. This is called an open architecture. This way, other people could make new parts or software to work with it. 
The computer used an Intel 8088 processor. A processor is like the brain of the computer. It handles the main tasks. The computer also used software from a company called Microsoft. This helped the machine work well for many people.
The IBM PC was a huge hit. Sales were much higher than IBM expected. Many people bought them for their homes. The design was so good that it became a standard. This means many other computers were made to work just like it.

Companies like Apple, Tandy, and Commodore were already selling popular machines for several hundred dollars. IBM's older microcomputers, like the 1975 IBM 5100, were too expensive for most people. The 5100 could cost as much as $20,000. To compete, IBM had to move away from its slow, bureaucratic business habits.
An advisor named Ron Mion proposed a radical plan to enter this market. He suggested that IBM must reduce costs by using standard parts and independent resellers. At first, IBM executives rejected this and insisted on making everything themselves. But by 1980, IBM president John Opel assigned William C. Lowe and Philip Don Estridge to lead a new unit. They formed a secret group called "Project Chess" in Boca Raton, Florida. 
The team had to choose a central processor, or CPU, to act as the computer's brain. They considered several options, including the Motorola 68000 and the Texas Instruments TMS9900. They ultimately chose the Intel 8088 processor. The 8088 was a variant of the 16-bit 8086 architecture. 
The design process was incredibly fast. The motherboard was designed in only 40 days. A working prototype was ready in just four months.
When the IBM PC debuted, it was priced to compete with existing microcomputers. A basic configuration started at $1,565. This was much lower than the IBM Datamaster, which cost $10,000. 
The IBM PC was a massive commercial success. Sales exceeded IBM's original expectations by as much as 800 percent. At one point, the company was shipping 40,000 PCs every month. By 1983, IBM had sold more than 750,000 machines.
