The machine used a piston pump to draw air through a cloth filter. Unlike modern vacuums, it did not use any brushes to loosen dirt. Instead, it relied entirely on suction through long tubes with nozzles at the ends. Because the engine and pump were so large, the machine had to be pulled by a horse and carriage. He later developed an electric-powered model, but it remained too bulky for home use.
Booth had a diverse career in civil and mechanical engineering. He was born in Gloucester, England, in 1871. After studying at Gloucester College, he attended the Central Technical College in London. He completed a three-year course under Professor William Cawthorne Unwin. Booth earned a Diploma of Associateship and placed second in his engineering department. In 1892, he began working in a London drawing office. There, he designed suspension bridges and large Ferris wheels for parks in London, Paris, and Vienna. He even worked on engines for Royal Navy battleships.
Because his machines were too large for houses, Booth sold cleaning services instead of products. He founded a company called Goblin to manage these services. The British Vacuum Cleaner Company used bright red vans to travel to clients. Uniformed operators would run long hoses through building windows to reach various rooms. 
Booth's career included some very unusual and notable moments. He once faced complaints about the loud noise his machines made. He was even fined for frightening horses during his work. One famous incident occurred at the Royal Mint. After cleaning, Booth was arrested because his machine had collected a massive amount of silver dust from the coins. He had forgotten to empty the receptacle before leaving. However, he was quickly released from custody. 
Booth's business decisions shaped the future of the vacuum industry. While his company lost the household market to Hoover, he successfully pivoted to the industrial sector. He built increasingly large models designed specifically for factories and warehouses. This focus allowed his company, which later became BVC, to survive for a long time. Today, BVC exists as a unit of Quirepace Ltd, a maker of pneumatic tube systems. Booth's legacy lives on through both the machines we use and the industrial systems that still rely on suction and air movement. He died in Croydon, England, on 14 January 1955.
