An adult housefly has a very specialized anatomy designed for survival. Their bodies are typically gray to black and covered in short hairs. The thorax, or the middle section, often features four dark, longitudinal lines. They possess only one pair of functional wings, which are translucent with a yellowish base. The second pair of wings is reduced to small structures called halteres. These halteres help the fly maintain stability during flight. 
The fly's head is built for high-speed sensory processing. They have large, red compound eyes that provide incredible visual information. Interestingly, houseflies process visual data about seven times faster than humans do. This high flicker fusion rate allows them to see human movements in slow motion. This helps them identify and avoid attempts to swat them. While males have eyes that almost touch, females have eyes that are set farther apart. 
Feeding and movement are driven by unique physical adaptations. Instead of chewing, they use a retractable, flexible proboscis to eat. This mouthpart has a fleshy tip called a labellum, which acts like a sponge. The labellum contains grooves known as pseudotracheae that suck up fluids through capillary action. To eat solid food, the fly must first use saliva to soften it into a liquid. 
Houseflies also use their legs for more than just walking. They have chemoreceptors, which are organs of taste, located on their tarsi. This allows them to identify food simply by walking over it. To keep these sensors clean, they often rub their legs together. To climb smooth surfaces, they use a pair of claws and adhesive pads called pulvilli. These pads allow them to walk on ceilings using Van der Waals forces. 
The life cycle of the housefly involves several distinct stages of metamorphosis. A female can lay up to 500 eggs in her lifetime, usually in batches of 75 to 150. These eggs are placed on decaying organic matter like food waste or feces. Within a day, the eggs hatch into legless, white larvae called maggots. These larvae thrive in warm, moist, and dark environments. After two to five days of development, they transform into reddish-brown pupae. 
When the adult is ready to emerge, it uses a specialized structure called a ptilinum. This is an eversible pouch on the head that helps tear open the pupal case. The adult stage is relatively short, usually lasting only two to four weeks. However, some houseflies can hibernate during the winter in cracks or woodwork. In tropical regions, more than 20 generations of flies can occur in a single year. 
Throughout history, the housefly has appeared in human culture and science. The Swedish zoologist Carl Linnaeus first described the species in 1758. In 1776, the Danish entomologist Johan Christian Fabricius provided a more detailed description. Beyond literature, such as William Blake's 1794 poem "The Fly," they are important in modern science. Because they have short life cycles and are easy to maintain, researchers use them to study aging and sex determination. They remain a fascinating link between human environments and the natural cycle of decay.
