Most cockroaches have a very specific way their bodies work. They have a tough outer shell called an exoskeleton. This shell contains calcium carbonate to keep their insides safe. The outside of the shell is coated in wax to keep water out. Their bodies are divided into a thorax and a ten-segmented abdomen. They use chewing mouthparts to eat their food. To move, they use three pairs of sturdy legs. The back legs are the longest and provide power for running.

These insects have a very long history on Earth. Their ancestors are called roachoids. These early relatives lived around 320 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. Modern cockroaches first appeared during the Late Jurassic period.

The evolutionary history of the Blattodea is incredibly long. Their ancestors, known as "roachoids," likely originated during the Carboniferous period about 320 million years ago. These early ancestors were different from modern roaches because they had long, external ovipositors for laying eggs. Modern cockroaches first appeared during the Late Jurassic period.

Cockroaches exhibit a wide range of sizes and social behaviors. Most species are roughly the size of a thumbnail, but some are much larger. The Australian giant burrowing cockroach, Macropanesthia rhinoceros, is the heaviest, while the Megaloblatta longipennis is one of the longest. On the other end of the scale, Attaphila cockroaches living with ants can be as small as 3.5 mm. Some species, like the German cockroach, are highly social and use pheromones to communicate. They use these chemical signals to create fecal trails that help others find food or shelter.

These social insects are also capable of collective decision-making. When a certain number of cockroaches, known as a quorum, gather at a food source, it signals to other cockroaches to stay. They seem to make decisions based on two main pieces of information: how dark the area is and how many other cockroaches are present. This allows a group to act as a single unit to find safety or resources. This complex behavior, along with their ability to survive in climates ranging from the Arctic to the tropics, makes them a remarkable subject of biological study.
