Highlands are very high lands.

They have big hills or mountains. Some parts are very cold. They may even have snow.

You can find them in many lands. Some highlands have thick rain forests. These forests have many special plants and animals. Other highlands are hard for people to live in. Even other planets have highland areas. They have high peaks and deep valleys. These places are very grand and tall.

Highlands are not unique to Earth. Other planets possess highland continents, which are also called terrae. These areas consist of topographically unstable terrain. They feature high peaks and deep valleys. While they resemble Earth's highlands, the term applies to much larger areas on other worlds. Scientists have identified these highland regions on Mercury and Venus. They can also be found on Mars and the Moon.
