The mountains have a complex geological history. The formation began during the Palaeozoic era. This occurred during the Hercynian mountain building phase. This process happened during the Carboniferous period, about 350 to 250 million years ago. At that time, very high mountains existed in Western Europe. These mountains reached heights of up to 4 kilometers. Over time, erosion wore these peaks down. Later, tectonic movements uplifted the Harz in a single block. This happened during the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. The northern edge was steeply tilted during the sub-Hercynian phase. This created the Northern Harz Boundary Fault. 
Because of this movement, the geology changes rapidly. The Harz is a fault-block range. It rises sharply from lowlands in the west and northeast. It dips gradually toward the south. The rocks are often very diverse in small areas. Scientists call this the "Classic Geological Square Mile." 

Climate plays a huge role in the Harz landscape. The mountains experience regular precipitation throughout the year. The range is exposed to wet westerly winds from the Atlantic. The windward side receives up to 1,600 mm of rain annually. This occurs in the West Harz and the High Harz. In contrast, the leeward side is much drier. The East Harz receives an average of only 600 mm of rain. This difference in rain affects the plants and forests. 
The vegetation is organized into six altitudinal zones. These zones range from the Coline zone to the Subalpine zone. The Brocken summit sits in the Subalpine zone. At lower levels, beech woods are very common. These woods often grow on nutrient-poor soil. As you climb, you find mixed woods of spruce and beech. However, many spruce stands were planted by humans. Higher up, between 800 and 1,000 meters, spruce woods dominate. These high forests are very humid. They are rich in mosses, lichens, and fungi. 
Water management is vital to the region. The Harz receives very heavy rainfall. Because of this, people have dammed many rivers. There are 17 dams that block twelve different rivers. The Oker Dam and Rappbode Dam are the two largest. 

Today, the Harz is home to about 600,000 people. They live in various towns and villages.
