The Hawar Islands are in the sea.

The Hawar Islands sit in the sea.
It is hard to find fresh water here. People must bring it in from far away. This is because the islands are very dry.
Many animals live on the islands. You might see a gazelle or an oryx. These are animals that live in the sand.
Many birds live here too. One kind of bird is the Socotra cormorant.
Some people go there to fish. Others go to see the beautiful sea. It is a very special place.

The Hawar Islands are a group of desert islands in the Gulf of Bahrain. They sit in the Persian Gulf near the west coast of Qatar. Most of the islands belong to Bahrain. However, a small and empty island called Jinan belongs to Qatar.
Life on the islands can be quite tough because fresh water is very hard to find. In the past, people had to collect water from the surface of the land. Today, they use a desalination plant to make fresh water. They also have to bring extra water in from other places. Most of the islands have no people living on them at all. On the main island, there is only a hotel and a police station. Because of this, people are not allowed to visit most of the islands easily. Local fishermen can still work in the waters nearby.
These islands have a long and interesting history. In the early 1800s, a group called the Dawasir lived in some of the settlements. In 1820, people first surveyed the area and called them the Warden's Islands. At that time, they found two different villages there.
The islands are a very important home for many living things. On Hawar island, you can find herds of Arabian oryx and sand gazelle. The sea around the islands is full of life, too. You might see sea turtles or large animals called dugongs swimming in the water.
Because the environment is so special, people work hard to protect it. The islands were listed as a Ramsar site in 1997 to help keep them safe. In 2002, the government of Bahrain tried to make them a World Heritage Site. They wanted to protect the endangered species that live there. Even though that plan did not work, the islands remain a key place for nature. Many different birds, like flamingos and ospreys, visit the islands every year.
The Hawar Islands are a desert archipelago located in the Gulf of Bahrain. This group of islands sits within the Persian Gulf, near the west coast of Qatar. While most of the islands are owned by Bahrain, the small, uninhabited Jinan Island belongs to Qatar.
The largest island in the group is Hawar. It accounts for more than 80% of the total land area of the archipelago. Following Hawar in size are Suwād al Janūbīyah, Suwād ash Shamālīyah, Rubud Al Sharqiyah, Rubud Al Gharbiyah, and Muhazwarah. The geography of these islands is quite diverse. Hawar features a continuous beach ridge complex on its west coast. Its east coast is defined by complex bay and cliff formations. Some areas feature subqa, which are shallow depressions. Other areas have calcified reef structures and algal mats.
Life on the islands is shaped by a lack of fresh water. Historically, people obtained water through surface collection. Today, a desalination plant is used to create fresh water. Even with this technology, additional supplies must still be brought in. The islands were once home to settlements of the Bahraini branch of the Dawasir in the early 19th century. In 1820, the islands were surveyed and called the Warden's Islands. At that time, two villages were recorded.
The ownership of the islands was once a subject of a major dispute. Bahrain and Qatar disagreed over which country controlled the archipelago. This dispute was eventually resolved in 2001 by the International Court of Justice. The court decided that most of the islands belonged to Bahrain. However, the court ruled that Jinan Island was separate from the Hawar group. Because of a previous agreement from when both nations were under British occupation, Jinan was awarded to Qatar. The islands are now administered as part of the Southern Governorate of Bahrain.
The Hawar Islands are a vital habitat for many endangered species. On Hawar island, small herds of Arabian oryx and sand gazelle live. The surrounding seas support sea turtles and a large population of dugongs. The archipelago is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. It supports massive populations of western reef egrets and sooty falcons. It is also home to Caspian and bridled terns, as well as ospreys. During the winter, birds like great crested grebes and greater flamingos visit the area.
One of the most remarkable facts about the islands involves the Socotra cormorant. The archipelago hosts a significant portion of the global population of this bird. In 1992, researchers recorded between 200,000 and 300,000 adult Socotra cormorants. This represents the largest known breeding concentration of the species in the world. The island of Suwād al Janūbīyah is home to a large colony that represents over 10% of the entire world population. This concentration of life makes the islands a site of global biological importance.
Because of this unique environment, several conservation efforts have taken place. The islands were listed as a Ramsar site in 1997. This designation helps protect wetlands that are important for birds and other wildlife. In 2002, the Bahraini government applied to have the islands named a World Heritage Site. They hoped to gain international recognition for the islands' unique habitats and endangered species. Although that specific application was unsuccessful, the islands remain a critical area for nature and environmental study.
