Historically, Doha grew from a settlement called Al Bidda. Al Bidda was a substantial trading port in the early 1800s.

In 1823, John MacLeod visited the area. He met the ruler and founder of Doha, Buhur bin Jubrun. Records often confused Al Bidda and Doha because they were so close. In the mid-1800s, the Al Thani family migrated from Fuwayrit to Doha. They arrived after 1847 under the leadership of Mohammed bin Thani. The Al Thani family eventually assumed control of the town.

During the late 1800s, foreign powers influenced the region. In 1871, Ottoman troops occupied the Musallam fort in Doha. This was done to protect the area from Saudi incursions. In 1893, a conflict known as the Battle of Al Wajbah occurred. During this battle, Ottoman troops fired at the townspeople. This resulted in many civilian deaths. The Ottomans eventually surrendered after Jassim Al Thani's troops cut off their water.

Later, Qatar became a British protectorate. It finally gained independence in 1971.

The economy of Doha changed significantly over time. In the early 20th century, the city relied on the pearl trade. This industry was vital for the survival of Qatar. In 1907, the city had 350 pearling boats. These boats carried a combined crew of 6,300 men.

However, the pearl market collapsed in 1907. This forced the leader to sell the harvest at half its value. Following this, Doha established its first custom house. Today, the city is a major emergent financial center in the Middle East. It is ranked "beta+" on the Globalization and World Cities Research Network scale. This scale measures how integrated a city is into the world network.

Modern Doha is divided into several specialized districts. Metropolitan Doha includes parts of Al Rayyan. One important area is Education City, which focuses on research and education. Another area is Hamad Medical City, used for medical care.
