Harvey Cushing was a famous American doctor who changed how we treat the brain. He was a pioneer in neurosurgery, which is a special kind of surgery for the brain and spine. This disease is caused by a problem with the pituitary gland. 
Cushing used many new ways to help his patients. He used X-rays to find tumors inside the brain. He also used electrical pulses to study how the brain senses things. To help during surgery, he worked with a physicist named William T. Bovie to create a tool called the Bovie electrocautery. This tool helps control bleeding. He even made special tools like the Cushing forceps to hold tissue. Another tool, the Cushing ventricular cannula, helps drain fluid from the brain. 
His journey began in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was born in 1869. He was the youngest of ten children in a family of doctors. He went to Yale University and earned his degree in 1891. Later, he studied medicine at Harvard Medical School. He finished his training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He also traveled to Europe to learn from great surgeons in places like Bern and Liverpool. 
During World War I, Cushing served as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He worked in France at a military hospital. There, he used electromagnets to pull metal pieces out of soldiers' brains. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1918. Later, he became a colonel. He was even given a special award from the British government called a Companion of the Bath. In 1923, the U.S. Army gave him the Distinguished Service Medal.

This illness prevented him from ever fully recovering his health. For his service, he received the Distinguished Service Medal and was named a Companion of the Bath.
One of Cushing's most lasting contributions was bringing blood pressure measurement to North America. He visited an Italian physician named Scipione Riva-Rocci. Riva-Rocci had developed a non-invasive way to measure pressure using a mercury manometer and an inflatable cuff. This device is called a sphygmomanometer. Cushing brought a sample of this tool back to the United States. It quickly became a vital part of medical diagnostics. This method was later improved by Nikolai Korotkov, who added the measurement of diastolic blood pressure.
Cushing is also famous for describing Cushing's disease. In 1912, he identified a syndrome caused by a malfunction of the pituitary gland. He originally called this "polyglandular syndrome" before publishing more detailed findings in 1932. His scientific excellence earned him many honors. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1926 for his biography of William Osler. He was also awarded the Cameron Prize for Therapeutics in 1924. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine at least 38 times. 
His legacy continues through the many neurosurgeons he trained. He was the world's leading teacher in the early 20th century. His influence helped establish neurosurgery as a respected and autonomous field of medicine. Today, his name is remembered through medical libraries, hospitals, and even a U.S. postage stamp. He passed away in 1939 from complications of a myocardial infarction. He is buried at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.
