Alzheimer published a short paper on his findings shortly after this meeting. It was not until 1910 that the disease became known as "Alzheimer's disease." This happened when Kraepelin included it in the 8th edition of his Handbook of Psychiatry. By 1911, physicians in the United States were already using his descriptions to diagnose patients.

Scientific debate often surrounds major discoveries, and Alzheimer's work was no exception. He had a fierce professional disagreement with Oskar Fischer, a pathologist from Prague. Fischer emphasized the importance of neuritic plaques and used the term "presbyophrenia" for the condition. While they had different interpretations, Kraepelin’s textbook had a much stronger influence on the medical community. This textbook helped distinguish Alzheimer's disease from other forms of senile dementia. It played a vital role in how doctors classified different types of dementia for many decades. Even today, researchers continue to study the specific case of Auguste Deter to understand the disease better.

Alzheimer’s personal life and health were marked by both stability and sudden change. He was born on 14 June 1864, in Marktbreit, Bavaria.
