It was one of the first buildings to use a fully pendentive dome. A pendentive is a triangular way of transitioning from a square base to a circular dome. This engineering allowed the dome to appear as if it were floating. This design made the Hagia Sophia the largest interior space in the world upon its completion. The building's layout and engineering have inspired many other religious structures for centuries.

History shows that three different churches were built on this same site.

The first church was consecrated in AD 360 during the reign of Emperor Constantius II. It likely had a wooden roof and a U-shaped plan. However, this first building was mostly destroyed by fire during the Nika riots in 404. A second church was then ordered by Emperor Theodosius II and inaugurated in AD 415.

For nearly one thousand years, it was the spiritual center of the Eastern Orthodox Church. During the Fourth Crusade in 1204, it was converted into a Catholic cathedral. This happened after the Latin Crusaders installed their own hierarchy in the city. When the Byzantine Empire was restored in 1261, it returned to Eastern Orthodox use. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Mehmed the Conqueror converted it into a mosque.

In the modern era, the building's status changed again. In 1935, the secular Republic of Turkey converted the site into a museum.

For many decades, it was one of the most visited tourist attractions in Turkey. However, in 2020, the Council of State annulled the previous decision to keep it as a museum. The Hagia Sophia was then redesignated as a mosque. This change was highly controversial and drew many different reactions. While some Muslim leaders welcomed the move, groups like UNESCO and the World Council of Churches expressed concern.

The architectural influence of the Hagia Sophia is vast.
