Work first began in the year 1248. Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden laid the first stone on August 15 of that year. The builders finished the eastern arm by 1322. However, the work did not go on without breaks. Construction stopped around the year 1560. For a long time, the building stayed unfinished. People did not have enough money to keep going. They finally started building again in 1842. They used the original plans from the Middle Ages. The project was finally finished in 1880. It took 632 years to complete the whole thing.

Long before this cathedral, other buildings stood on this hill.

In the 6th century, Merovingian kings built a church here. This church was a burial place for royal families. Later, a large church called Hildebold Cathedral was built in 870. This church was a model for many others in Europe. It was very large and had two choirs. One choir was for Mary, and the other was for Saint Peter. Some very old items are still found near the site. There is a stone basin called a piscina. It is the oldest evidence of Christian worship in Cologne.

One reason the cathedral is so famous is because of special items.

These items are called relics. In 1164, the bones of the Three Wise Men were brought to Cologne. They were kept in a beautiful gold box called a shrine. This shrine was made between 1190 and 1225. It is a very fine piece of gold work. Because of these relics, many people went on a special journey to see them. This made Cologne a famous place for pilgrims. To help manage the large crowds, a special office was created. This office was called the "guardian of the kings."

Today, the cathedral is a symbol of strength and belief. It connects the history of the Middle Ages to the modern world. The tall towers give the church a huge front. In fact, it has the largest façade of any church in the world. In the city of Cologne, only the telecommunications tower is taller. Most people recognize it as a great part of German history. It shows how people can work together over many centuries. The building stands as a powerful testimony to the past. It remains a place of wonder for millions of visitors.

The cathedral is the tallest cathedral in the world. It is also the tallest twin-spired church on Earth. In Europe, it is the third tallest church, following Sagrada Família and Ulm Minster. Within the city of Cologne, only the telecommunications tower is taller than the cathedral.

The history of Christian worship on this site begins long before the current structure.

In the 5th century, a baptistery existed to the east of the current choir. Early Christians used it for a rite where they were doused in knee-deep water. Archaeological finds include a baptismal font and a stone basin called a piscina. This piscina is considered the oldest evidence of Christian worship in Cologne. In the 6th century, Merovingian kings built an episcopal church on the site. This building served as a burial place for the royal family. One example is the burial of King Theudebert I's wife, Wisigard, around 537.

In the Carolingian era, a new structure called Hildebold Cathedral was consecrated in 870.

It was named after Bishop Hildebold, an advisor to Charlemagne. This cathedral was roughly 115 meters long. It was one of the largest Carolingian churches ever built. It served as an architectural model for many churches in the early Holy Roman Empire. The building was a basilica with two distinct choirs. The east choir was dedicated to Mary, while the west choir honored Saint Peter. This design was intended to mimic Old St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. This helped Cologne claim status as a holy city.

A major turning point occurred on July 23, 1164.

The Archbishop Rainald of Dassel brought the bones of the Three Wise Men to Cologne. These relics were given to the archbishop by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Between 1190 and 1225, craftsmen created the Shrine of the Three Kings. This shrine is a highly sophisticated work of medieval goldsmithing. The presence of these relics turned Cologne into an international pilgrimage site. To manage the massive crowds of pilgrims, an office called the *custos regum*, or "guardian of the kings," was established. This office helped oversee the many people traveling to see the relics.

Construction of the current Gothic cathedral began in 1248.

Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden laid the foundation stone on August 15 of that year. The eastern arm was completed under Master Gerhard and was consecrated in 1322. However, building progress was not constant. Work on the south tower stopped at the belfry level. A massive crane remained on top of the tower for 400 years. Construction eventually halted around 1560. For centuries, the cathedral remained an unfinished project.

The cathedral was finally completed in the 19th century. This revival was fueled by Romantic enthusiasm for the Middle Ages. The Prussian state and the church worked together to finish the project. A group called the Central-Dombauverein was founded in 1842. This association raised two-thirds of the necessary funds through civic effort. The Prussian state provided the remaining third. They used the original medieval plans and drawings to ensure accuracy. The project was completed in 1880 after 632 years of construction. At completion, the building reached a height of 157 meters.

The cathedral is a masterpiece of both engineering and faith.
