Habib Bourguiba was a famous leader from Tunisia. 


At that time, France ruled Tunisia. Bourguiba wanted his country to be free. He joined political groups to fight for independence. The French leaders arrested him many times. He was even sent away to other places. Eventually, he led talks to end the fighting.
In 1956, Tunisia became independent. Bourguiba became the prime minister. Later, he became the first president in 1957.

As time went on, Bourguiba's health began to get much worse. His long rule ended in 1987 when a new leader took over.
