Mohamed Naguib was a central figure in the transformation of Egypt during the mid-20th century.
Naguib was born on February 19, 1901, in Khartoum, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.

His military career was marked by rapid promotion and significant bravery. In 1931, he was promoted to the rank of captain. By 1938, he had reached the rank of major. In 1944, he became the regional governor of the Sinai Peninsula. Naguib fought in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. During this conflict, he was wounded seven times.
At the military academy, Naguib joined the Free Officers Movement. This group consisted of nationalist army officers under the age of 35. They were veterans of various nationalist uprisings and the 1948 war. The group opposed the presence of British military personnel in Egypt and Sudan. They also believed King Farouk was corrupt and incompetent. Gamal Abdel Nasser originally led this movement. Nasser realized the movement needed a respected, older officer to gain credibility. He invited Naguib to assume leadership. This decision strengthened the movement but also created future friction. The younger officers viewed Naguib as a symbolic figurehead rather than a decision-maker.
On July 23, 1952, the Free Officers launched a coup d'état.
As the first president, Naguib achieved several major diplomatic goals. He successfully negotiated the independence of Sudan. He also secured the withdrawal of all British military personnel from Egypt.
However, Naguib's presidency ended due to internal power struggles.
