He was the eldest son of King Adolf Frederick and Queen Louisa Ulrika. Gustav is remembered as a complex leader who shaped Swedish politics and culture. He sought to increase the power of the monarchy. He believed the nobility held too much influence over the state. This influence had grown since the Great Northern War. To change the government, Gustav used a sudden move known as a coup d'état.

This event in 1772 was called the Swedish Revolution. It ended a period known as the Age of Liberty. During that time, the Riksdag of the Estates held most of the power. Gustav's coup allowed him to take control from the government. He later passed the Union and Security Act of 1789. This law removed most powers from the Riksdag. However, it also broke the special privileges of the nobility. This act opened up the government to all citizens.

Gustav was a major patron of the arts and sciences. He believed that culture was essential to a great nation. He founded the Swedish Academy to support literature and language. In 1784, Gustav acquired the island of Saint Barthélemy. This gave Sweden a colony in the Americas. This acquisition also allowed for profits through the transatlantic slave trade.

Gustav also worked to reform the legal and social systems of Sweden. He was an admirer of the philosopher Voltaire. Following this influence, he legalized the presence of Catholics and Jews in Sweden. He enacted reforms to promote economic liberalism. He also introduced social reforms to improve life for his people. Gustav worked to restrict the use of torture and capital punishment. However, his record on freedom was mixed. While he supported many reforms, he also limited the Freedom of the Press Act. Amendments in 1774 and 1792 effectively ended independent media in the country.

His reign included several military challenges. Gustav attempted to seize Norway with help from Russia. He also tried to win back Swedish territories in the Baltic. These territories had been lost during the Great Northern War. Most of these military attempts failed, including his wars with Russia. However, he achieved a major victory at the Battle of Svensksund. This victory prevented a total military defeat for Sweden. It proved that the Swedish military could still be a powerful force.

Gustav's life ended during a political crisis. In 1792, he attended a masquerade ball. During the event, he was shot in the lower back by members of an aristocratic-parliamentary coup attempt.
