He rose quickly through the ranks during the French Revolution. Napoleon Bonaparte even named him a Marshal of the Empire. This was a very high rank in the French army.
In 1810, something unexpected happened. The King of Sweden had no children. Leaders chose Bernadotte to be the next heir. This means he would become the next king. He took the name Charles John.
In 1814, Norway joined with Sweden.
Charles XIV John was a man who lived many different lives. He was born in Pau, France, on 26 January 1763. His father was a prosecutor named Jean Henri Bernadotte. His mother was Jeanne de Saint-Jean. As a young boy, he studied to be an attorney. However, his life changed when his father died when he was seventeen. He decided to join the French Royal Army in 1780. He started as a simple private in the Régiment Royal–La Marine.
He became a very famous and skilled soldier during the French Revolution. Bernadotte was known for being brave and inspiring his men. Once, when his troops were retreating, he threw his own epaulettes to the ground. He told his men he would not stay if they ran away. This made his soldiers fight harder to win. He rose through the ranks very quickly. By 1794, he was a brigadier general. Later, Napoleon Bonaparte named him a Marshal of the Empire.
In 1810, a very surprising thing happened to him. The King of Sweden, Charles XIII, had no children. A Swedish courtier named Baron Carl Otto Mörner helped suggest Bernadotte as the new heir. This meant Bernadotte would become the Crown Prince of Sweden. He changed his name to Charles John to fit his new home. He also became the regent and leader of the Swedish military.
During the wars in Europe, Charles John was a clever diplomat. In 1812, he helped bring Russia and Britain together in an alliance. He helped write the Trachenberg Plan to win the war. He also led the Allied Army of the North. In 1814, he led a campaign against Denmark. This led to the Treaty of Kiel on 15 January 1814. Because of this treaty, Norway was given to Sweden. This started a union between Sweden and Norway that lasted nearly a century.
Charles John became the King of Sweden and Norway in 1818. He was the very first king of the Bernadotte dynasty. He ruled for many years until he died in 1844. His reign was a time of peace and prosperity for his people. He showed that a person could change their life in amazing ways. He went from a soldier in France to a king in Sweden.
Charles XIV John was a remarkable figure who transitioned from a French soldier to a Scandinavian monarch. Born Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte on 26 January 1763, he was the youngest of five children. He was born in Pau, the capital of the Béarn province in southwestern France. His father, Jean Henri Bernadotte, served as a prosecutor. After his father died when he was seventeen, Bernadotte abandoned his legal apprenticeship. He joined the French Royal Army on 3 September 1780 as a private.
During the French Revolution, Bernadotte demonstrated exceptional military talent and leadership. He was known for his daring assaults and his ability to inspire valor in his troops. One famous story describes him rallying retreating soldiers by throwing his epaulettes to the ground. He told his men that he would refuse to be their colonel if they fled in dishonor. This display of character motivated his men to reform their lines and counter-attack. By 1794, he had reached the rank of brigadier general. He later served as a divisional general and even held the position of Minister of War.
His relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte was complex and often turbulent. Although Bernadotte did not participate in Napoleon's coup d'état in 1799, Napoleon worked to win him over. Napoleon named him a Councillor of State in February 1800 to recognize his influence. After serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the West, Bernadotte was offered the governorship of Louisiana. However, he declined this post because Napoleon refused to provide the necessary soldiers and funding. Instead, Bernadotte was named an ambassador to the United States, though this posting was canceled following the Sale of Louisiana. He eventually became a Marshal of the Empire and was made Prince of Pontecorvo.
In 1810, Bernadotte's life changed through an unexpected political election. The King of Sweden, Charles XIII, had no children to inherit the throne. A Swedish courtier named Baron Carl Otto Mörner advocated for Bernadotte to become the heir-presumptive. Upon his election as Crown Prince, Bernadotte adopted Swedish names. He took the name Charles (Carl) from his adoptive father and John (Johan) as a Swedish version of Jean.
As Crown Prince, Charles John became a vital diplomat and military strategist during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1812, he helped form the Sixth Coalition by allying with Alexander I of Russia. He used Swedish diplomacy to connect the warring interests of Russia and Britain. He played a major role in creating the Trachenberg Plan, which was the Allied campaign plan used to win the war. He also commanded the Allied Army of the North. This force successfully defended Berlin and participated in the decisive attack at the Battle of Leipzig.
Following the Leipzig campaign, Charles John sought to secure Sweden's northern borders. In late 1813, he liberated Bremen and Lübeck from French control. He then invaded Denmark to remove Napoleon's last major ally from the war. This campaign resulted in the Treaty of Kiel, signed on 15 January 1814. The treaty forced Denmark to cede Norway to Sweden. This led to the Swedish–Norwegian War of 1814, which lasted only nineteen days. This conflict resulted in a union between Sweden and Norway that lasted for almost a century.
Upon the death of Charles XIII in 1818, Bernadotte ascended to the throne as King Charles XIV John.
