Scientists use different names for this area. Geologists often call it the Afro-Arabian Rift System. This name describes the deep structures in the ground. It is a place that many people study. They look at the land, the animals, and even old bones.

This landscape was made by moving parts of the Earth. These parts are called plates. In the north, the Arabian plate and the African plate move past each other. This movement creates deep basins like the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is very low. In fact, it sits below sea level.

While many fields like zoology and ecology use this name, geologists often prefer a different term. They call the underlying structure the Afro-Arabian Rift System. This name focuses on the geological processes that created these deep valleys. The term is also used to describe specific sections, like the Kenyan Rift Valley.

This landscape is shaped by the movement of tectonic plates. In the north, the Dead Sea Transform acts as a boundary. This is a transform boundary between the Arabian plate and the African plate. The plates move past each other with different types of pressure. In some areas, this creates pull-apart basins like the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee. In other sections, it causes transpression. Transpression is when the plates push together while sliding. This movement has uplifted the Anti-Lebanon and Mount Lebanon mountains.

The Red Sea Rift serves as a mid-ocean ridge. It accommodates the increasing separation between the Nubian and Arabian plates. This rift connects to the East African Rift System at the Afar triple junction. The Afar triangle is a unique area of thinned and heavily intruded continental crust.

South of this junction, the Main Ethiopian Rift flows through the Ethiopian Highlands. This section is often associated with major off-axis volcanism. This means volcanic activity occurs away from the main center of a ridge. Many basins here contain products from these volcanic eruptions.

Further south, the East African Rift System splits into two distinct branches. The first is the western Albertine Rift. This branch is characterized by deep, freshwater lakes. Notable examples include Lake Tanganyika, which is the second deepest freshwater lake on Earth. The second is the eastern Gregory Rift. This branch passes through Kenya and is often called the Kenya Rift Valley. The floor of this rift is marked by many volcanoes and small lakes. Some of these lakes, such as Lake Natron, are saline and alkaline.

The geography of the northern Asian section is quite complex. It includes the Ghab Plain and the Beqaa valley. The Jordan Rift Valley extends from these areas down to the Red Sea. The Hula valley is a nearly flat area at about 70 meters elevation. Below this, the Dead Sea depression sits entirely below sea level. This depression covers approximately 5,000 square kilometers. The deepest part is the Dead Sea itself. The area is often flanked by very steep sides.

History shows how scientists identified these massive features. The Austrian geologist Eduard Suess first proposed the idea of a linked set of features. He suggested they stretched from Syria all the way to Mozambique. Later, in 1896, the British geologist John Walter Gregory introduced the term Great Rift Valley.

His work helped define the concept for the world. Today, the system remains a major subject of study in many scientific disciplines. It provides clues about how our planet's crust behaves over long periods.

The Great Rift Valley also serves a vital biological purpose. It acts as a major part of the Asian–East African Flyway. This is a route used by migratory birds. It is the second most important flyway globally for soaring birds. Many species use this path to travel between continents. These include the White Stork and the Great White Pelican.
